The objective of this six-week course, F148 Other Worlds in Science Fiction and Fantasy, is to learn to understand the power of a mythic vision of the world when writing a science fiction or fantasy novel or short story. After an introduction to the sub-genres of science fiction/fantasy, we will learn how to research our ideas to make our fictional world viable. Developing characters, plotting, constructing a scene and narrative voice will be part of any good science fiction/fantasy novel or short story, and we will complete exercises to enhance our understanding of these essentials. In the last part of the course, we will concentrate on symbolism and how to develop them.
